Krasnodar suffered a surprising defeat away to Moscow’s Dynamo in the penultimate 29th round of the Russian Premier League, all but extinguishing their hopes of defending the national championship. This analysis delves into the shocking result in the capital and the standings ahead of the final matches.
The two sides met for the second time in five days, having faced off in Krasnodar on Thursday in the Russian Cup semi-final. As in their previous encounter in Moscow, regulation time produced no goals – a rare sight over 180 minutes, though the match was far from dull. It went to a penalty shootout where Krasnodar goalkeeper Stanislav Agkatsev emerged as the hero with a stunning leg save reminiscent of Igor Akinfeev’s iconic stop against Spain at the 2018 World Cup.
In this league clash, Dynamo sought revenge and a chance to derail Krasnodar’s title charge. A win would have returned Krasnodar to the top of the table. However, Roland Gusev’s side had failed to score against the southerners in five official matches during the 2025/26 season – a grim statistic.
Once again, a goalkeeper stole the show. The first half saw Moscow create only a few chances. Bitello’s powerful shot was saved by Agkatsev despite poor visibility. Krasnodar had better opportunities, including a two-on-one break by John Cordoba and Eduard Spertsyan (the league’s top scorer and assist leader respectively), but Nicolas Marichal’s interception and Andrei Lunev’s save denied them.
With open-play goals elusive, set pieces proved decisive. In the 32nd minute, Spertsyan’s free kick found Diego Costa unmarked to head into the corner. The league’s most prolific attack finally broke their goal drought against Dynamo.
But Dynamo responded immediately after the break. Konstantin Tyukavin capitalized on defensive disorganization, finishing Juan José Cáceres’ cross to make it 1-1. The goal was celebrated not only at the Petrovsky Park arena but also across Saint Petersburg.
Krasnodar immediately increased the tempo, creating two one-on-one chances. Lunev made a solid save first, then Nikita Krivtsov’s goal was ruled out for offside. Kevin Lenini was then played through on goal, but Lunev was again unbeatable. Andrei was in inspired form. On the 85th minute, substitute Juan Boselli burst through the defense for a one-on-one, only to be denied by a magnificent Lunev.
Krasnodar couldn’t find another goal, and they couldn’t even salvage a draw. Agkatsev was forced into a save from close range before thanking his luck after Sergeev missed. But Ivan Sergeev made amends, firing past Stanislav to secure a sensational victory for Dynamo and his coach Roland Gusev, who was sent off for persistent dissent towards the referee.
This appears to be the end of the title race. Dynamo and former Zenit goalkeeper Andrei Lunev gifted the Saint Petersburg club a massive boost. Zenit sit top again, two points clear of a Krasnodar side that looked unrecognizable on Monday. Given Zenit’s superior head-to-head record, a draw in Rostov won’t even be enough for Krasnodar. They need Zenit to lose while they beat Orenburg. Frankly, that outcome seems unlikely.
