FIFA is reportedly exploring a groundbreaking initiative for the 2026 World Cup that would see a special badge added to the jerseys of players taking part in the tournament for the first time. This move aims to shine a spotlight on emerging talents on the global stage.
According to reports from ESPN, the new badge—dubbed the “debut badge”—would be worn only during each player’s first match in the competition. After the game, it would be removed and later preserved inside a commemorative card, serving as a tangible keepsake of their maiden World Cup appearance.
The concept is not entirely unprecedented. Similar badges have already been used in certain sports leagues and competitions across the United States, and the idea has now been floated for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The badge is expected to help fans quickly identify newcomers, adding a personalized touch to each player’s tournament debut. Notable footballers likely to make their first World Cup appearance in 2026 include Norway’s Erling Haaland, Spain’s Lamine Yamal, and several other rising stars from various national teams.
If FIFA formally adopts this initiative, players from Arab nations who are competing in their first-ever World Cup could also sport the badge. The 2026 tournament will feature 48 teams for the first time, running from June 11 to July 19.
