Jens Castroff’s season has ended prematurely earlier than anticipated, yet his focus remains firmly on a larger goal ahead. The 23-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach utility player is concentrating on World Cup preparations despite the setback.

On April 29 (KST), Borussia Mönchengladbach announced that the German Football Association’s disciplinary committee had imposed a three-match suspension on Castroff. This stemmed from a direct red card he received in a previous match against Wolfsburg, effectively sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

The timing was particularly unfortunate as Castroff had recently shifted to left wing-back and was showing clear improvement in performance. Losing the opportunity to maintain match sharpness was a disappointment from the national team’s perspective as well.

However, Castroff views his early season end differently. In an online interview with domestic media on the 29th, he interpreted it positively. “Preparing for an international tournament after a long season isn’t easy. Many players end up playing with injuries,” he pointed out.

“Ending the season early can actually help. It allows me to manage my physical condition and prepare without injury risks,” he added. “A month of rest is no problem at all.”

His preparation plan is clear. “There’s about two and a half weeks before the World Cup. I can use that time to bring my condition up to 100 percent,” Castroff explained, stating he is currently focused on building up his fitness.

The player’s adaptation to the national team continues. Holding dual German and South Korean citizenship, Castroff played for Germany’s youth teams before choosing to represent South Korea. Since his senior international debut last year, he has been recognized for his work rate and defensive contribution, establishing himself as a new option.

He is also dedicating time to language adaptation. “I try to study Korean for an hour every day, even while in Germany. Living with the national team helps me get accustomed faster,” Castroff said.

His role within the team remains flexible. Considered a versatile asset capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, on the flanks, and in defense, Castroff does not rush to define his position. However, he emphasized, “I am confident that I can contribute to the team.”

An early season exit is undoubtedly a variable. Concerns remain about maintaining match rhythm. But it also provides time for recovery and preparation.

Castroff has set a clear direction. “The important things are the team staying united and maintaining good physical condition,” he said. “My goal is to enter the World Cup in top form.”

Meanwhile, the Korea Football Association officially announced on the 30th that the final national team roster would be revealed on May 16. It remains to be seen whether Castroff can raise his condition and join the South Korean squad for the 2026 North and Central America World Cup.
